Convenient Woodworking and Heartwood and Hazel are an unlikely pair of businesses, but they came to fruition at the same time and for basically the same reason.

In the autumn of 2020 we welcomed our first daughter into the world and named her Hazel. She has been our pride and joy ever since! We had planned to both work full-time, but then the pandemic hit and childcare was virtually non-existent. We were lucky enough for me to be able to quit my job when my partner’s parental leave expired, and I embarked along the journey of stay-at-home parenthood.

Three or four months in my daughter and I had settled into our respective routines. Hers: Eat, poop, sleep. And mine: Make sure she doesn’t die. I began to explore options for me to keep my mind and hands occupied while hopefully providing some of that family income I was no longer making. The idea for a woodworking business rose immediately to the top of the list. I had been doing various woodworks for years; building furniture, toys, home improvement projects, etc. and greatly enjoyed it, not to mention I had most of the groundwork already built in my workshop.

We decided that it made sense to break-up the business into two facets. Specifically, Heartwood and Hazel would be the umbrella for all things kid related. Toys, kids furniture, Montessori teaching tools, etc. Convenient Woodworking encompasses everything else; signs, wall art, custom furniture, catch-all trays, cutting boards, pizza peels, and anything else we (or you!) can dream up.

If you are interested in supporting me and my little family by purchasing an item designed and built in Fletcher NC either for yourself or as a gift and you aren't seeing something you like in our shop, please reach out! I would love to work with you to design a piece to suit your needs. You can contact me here. Or reach out via the social media of your preference.
